Classic Apple Crumble with Custard

Soft sweet-tart apples beneath a crisp buttery crumble topping, perfect served warm with vanilla custard.
Ingredients
- 575 g tart apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 2 tbsp caster sugar for the apples
- 175 g cake flour
- 110 g caster sugar
- 110 g cold butter, cubed
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, optional
- 1 tbsp rolled oats, optional
- warm vanilla custard for serving
Method
- Preheat the oven to 190°C.
- Toss the sliced apples with the 2 tablespoons of sugar and cinnamon if using.
- Place the apples in a medium baking dish.
- Combine the flour and remaining caster sugar with a pinch of salt.
- Rub in the cold butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
- Spread the crumble mixture evenly over the apples without pressing it down too firmly.
- Sprinkle with rolled oats if using.
- Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the topping is golden and the apples are tender.
- Rest for 10 minutes and serve warm with vanilla custard.
